How does Salesflare filter out automated opens & clicks?

Salesflare constantly works behind the scenes to make your email tracking more accurate by detecting and removing “fake” opens and clicks caused by spam filters, security scanners, and email provider bots. Here’s how this detection works in practice.

Email opens

Sometimes, emails are “opened” by automated systems rather than the actual person you sent them to. This can happen when:

  • Spam filters scan your email for harmful content

  • Email clients automatically load images in the background

Here’s how we filter these out:

  • Too fast? We Ignore them. Opens within seconds of sending are almost always automated email scans, so we don’t count them.

  • Your own opens? These are also skipped. If you or a teammate open the email (e.g. from the Sent folder), it’s not counted. This is done by tracking on which IP addresses your team uses Salesflare and then excluding interactions from these IPs.

  • We don’t block Gmail’s image proxy. If Gmail preloads images, we keep the tracked open for reporting accuracy but avoid instant notifications if it happens right after delivery.

  • We remove duplicate opens. If the same source opens multiple times in a row, we only keep one.

Result: You get open rates and notifications that reflect real people reading your email, not background bots.

Email clicks

Just like with email opens, Salesflare automatically detects and removes clicks that happen from IP addresses on which your team has used Salesflare.

Our click tracking is highly accurate: if a click is recorded, it means a link was opened.

However, some security tools automatically click every link in an email right after it’s delivered to check if they’re safe.

Here’s how we reduce that:

  • We use a paid IP classification service to detect and filter clicks from known security scanners and data centers.

  • This filtering works in most cases, but a few automated clicks may still appear as the available IP classification is not 100% perfect.

How to spot automated clicks

In case automated clicks still slip through, here’s how to detect them yourself.

Look for these patterns:

  • Likely automated: All links in the email are clicked (almost) instantly after delivery.

  • Likely real: Only some links are clicked, and clicks happen over a longer period of time.

Tip: Recipients at large companies or government organizations often have stricter email security systems, so you may see more automated clicks with those audiences.

In short: Salesflare does the heavy lifting so you can focus on opens and clicks that reflect true customer engagement. Automated clicks still slip through occasionally, but are relatively easy to spot.
